Forty year ago, as a young postgraduate student of Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1973, I listened to a guest lecture on ‘ The future directions in Research’. The speaker, Prof. Denis Burkitt  (of Burkitt Lymphoma fame) had just become head of the Medical Research Council in UK, after some path breaking research on ‘Fibre in the diet’.
